How Cook County Traffic and Criminal Courts are Oraganized
Summary: How to find out which Chicago area court a warrant case may be in. Information on how the criminal and traffic courts of Cook County are organized.

If you are trying to get information on a warrant or pending court case in the Chicago Area or Cook County, the first step is figuring our which court to check with. There are different divisions for Felonies, Misdemeanors, and Common Traffic Ticket Cases.  You may have to check with more than one division.

Here is the well written description from the Court County Court Clerks Office of how it works:

Traffic and Criminal matters are handled by the following Clerk’s Office operational areas: Criminal Division (felonies); Criminal Department (misdemeanors); and the Traffic Division. The Suburban Divisions handle criminal and traffic violations occurring within their district boundaries. For information on clearing your criminal or traffic records, please see our section on Expungements and Sealing.

The Circuit Court of Cook County includes a detailed section entitled Traffic Court Information. This section contains helpful information to assist persons who have received traffic tickets in Cook County.

Explanations on traffic court procedures and policies, the rights of all persons in traffic violations cases and possible penalties for traffic violations are presented. Other important topics covered include reinstating driving privileges in DUI cases and in other instances. Additional Traffic information is also available at the Southern Illinois Self Help section Traffic Court in Illinois pamphlet. Criminal information, including Frequently Asked Questions, Forms, Procedures and Reference Materials are located in our Criminal Division and Criminal Department sections.

The best way to get accurate information from a court on a warrant case is to visit the court in person and ask the Court Clerk to view the file or to tell you what information you want to know.
